To his Excellency Beriah Magoffin Govenor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Your petitioner James C Brookover resident in the city Maysville and state of Kentucky states that at the late July Term of the Mason Circuit Court he was fined by the Judge thereof the sum of fifty -- dollars for selling on one occassion a glass of liquor to a slave of G H Mc'Atee -- [ ] M^cAtee had told your petitioner to let his slave have what ever he wanted provided he paid for it, and he had perchased and paid for under that parol license at different times some groceries;

Thomas Greer the Clerk of your petitioner sold to said slave a single glass of spirits without his consent or knowledge and against the general order to the Clerk not to sell or give to any slave whatever, liquor--; the sale was made by the Clerk against his order and was done by him in ignorance of the extemely stringant law upon the subject-- The jury however under the influence of (as he believes) a very suspiciousJealousy and a too rigid construction of the law found him Guilty and he was accordingly fined: He has stated the facts and hopes you will find in them sufficient to authorize you to remit said fine, which he most respectfully prays you to do.
