Dear Sir,

A judgment for $100 on a forfeited recognizance was rendered at the Spring term for 1859 of the Boone Circuit Court against Wickliffe Grubbs and W^m Grubbs, securities of one Eveline a slave belonging to a relation of said Mess^rs Grubbs, who had been held to appear on charge of infanticide; but who ran away from her — owner — just before trial.

The gentlemen who became security for — this
unfortunate negress did so under promptings of humanity; and at the suggestion of Judge Elijah Nuttall, who was then on the bench. The woman, who was worth some $500, ran away from her mistress, without any fault of hers or that of the securities; being frightened at the idea of standing trial on a chardge, of which I can say almost with certainty she would have been acquitted. My own affidavit, (having been counsel for the woman) accompanies the petition; and I have therein narrated the facts of this case.

No proceedings to collect the judgment have ever
been taken against the securities; one of whom (Wickliffe Grubbs) has since died; but it is deemed advisable to apply to your excellency for a remission under the circumstances

The case is one which I trust will command itself to the clemency of the Executive
