John Barnes of the County and state as above being first duly sworn states, that one Claudius Tift (a painter by trade) formerly of same County and state did on or about the 16th day of Dec 1864 commit a felony by breaking the seal and taking from a letter, entrusted to said Tift to deliver the sum of $400,00 that said felony was committed in Campbell County Kentucky after which the said Tift fled to La Crosse Wisconsin where he now is. Affiant further states that said Tift has written a letter to Col J, P, Jackson of the above County and State mailed at Lacrosse confessing his crime and that said letter is now in the possession of affiant- further the money taken was the property of affiant
