I am just in receipt of a letter from the merchants of New Orleans John Watt & Co, which they they say they are not willing to come under any obligations whatever, in the present unsettled condition of political & commercial affairs, as I have no other means to fall back upon & done my utmost to arrange it & failed I am in hopes you will not think hard it.
The river is getting very high against the Levee, It is with in 8 to 10 inches of the last rise & rising at the ^rate^ of three or four inches in twenty four hours, but do not think it will rise much higher than the last rise, please give my respects to Wilha & Stoddard.
