New York attorney, soldier, and congressman. South Norwalk, Connecticut, native. Captain in the 1st New York Volunteer Infantry during the Mexican-American War from 1846 to 1848. Senator of the California State Senate from 1850 to 1856. Graduated from Harvard Law School in 1860. Colonel of the 77th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment from 1861 to 1862. Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers from 1862 to January 1863. Member of the United States House of Representatives from New York from 1865 to 1867. Member of the Democratic Party.
