Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, attorney and judge. Pittsburgh native. Married to Sarah N. McCandless. Father of Mary McCandless, Stephen C. McCandless, and Margaret D. McCandless. Graduated from Western University of Pennsylvania in 1826. Admitted to the bar in 1831. Attorney in Pittsburgh from 1831 to 1859. Judge of the U.S. District Court of Western Pennsylvania from 1859 to 1876. Member of the Senate of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania from 1865 to 1869.
