Western Union Telegraph Company
1856
Founded in 1856, following the consolidation of various regional telegraph companies operated by the New York and Mississippi Valley Printing Company and the acquisition of Samuel Morse's telegraph patent. Created the first transcontinental telegraph service in the nation. Founder: Ezra Cornell.
