Created in March 1863 upon passage of the Enroll Act of March 3, 1863. Responsible for the enrollment of drafted soldiers, enlistment of volunteers, arrest of deserters, compilation of statistics on recruits, and reporting of U.S. Army Casualties. Resided within the War Department of the United States Government. Led by the Provost Marshal General. Civil War-era Provost Marshal General: James Barnet Fry (1863-1866).
