Clay County, Kentucky, farmer and soldier. Kentucky native. Son of William Mattingly and Alice Mattingly. Married to Mary "Mollie" Asher Mattingly in Clay County on February 1, 1855. Father of Joseph Mattingly, Nancy Mattingly, Moses G. Mattingly, John Mattingly, Sally Mattingly, and Jemima Mattingly. Student in Clay County in 1850. Farmer in Clay County in 1860. Employed Elizabeth Amet as a servant in Clay County in 1860. Served in the 1st Harlan County Battalion (U.S.A.) as first lieutenant from October 13, 1862, to January 13, 1863. Served in the 49th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry Regiment (U.S.A.) as first lieutenant from September 19, 1863, to December 26, 1864.
