New York City, New York, soldier. Virginia native. Son of Ann Mason Scott and William Scott. Married to Maria Mayo Scott in Virginia on March 11, 1817. Father of Maria Mayo Scott, John May Scott, Virginia Scott, Edward Winfield Scott, Cornelia Winfield Scott, Adeline Camilla Scott, and Marcella Scott. Graduate of the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, in 1805. Served in the U.S. Army from 1808 to 1861. Commissioned captain of light artillery in 1808. Court martialed and suspended from service in January 1810. Served as lieutenant colonel, brigadier general, brevet major general, major general, commanding general, brevet lieutenant general, general in chief in the U.S. Army from 1812 to November 1, 1861. Authored General Regulations for The Army; or Military Institutes in 1821. Unsuccessful Whig Party candidate for president of the United States in 1848. Unsuccessful Whig Party candidate for president of the United States in 1852. Resigned as general-in-chief of the U.S. Army on November 1, 1861. Authored Memoirs of Lieut.-General Scott, LL.D. in 1864.
