John Barnes of the County and State above, being first duly sworn states, That one Claudius Tift (a painter by trade) formerly of same County & State, did on or about the 16th day of Dec/64 commit a felonly by breaking the seal & taking from a letter, entrusted to said Tift to deliver, the sum of $400.00 that said felony was committed in Campbell County Kentucky after which the said Tift fled to La Crosse Wisconsin wherehenow is, affiant further states that said Tift has written a letter to Col J. P. Jackson of the above County and State mailed at La Crosse confessing his crime that said letter is now in the possession of affiant, further the money taken was the property of affiant.
