Warren County, Illinois, attorney, and soldier. Parkman, Ohio native. Son of Hendrick E. Paine and Harriet Ellsworth. Married to Charlotte Chapin Paine on May 24, 1843. Father of Phelps Paine, Harriet Paine, Maria C. Paine, and Lydia Paine. Graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1839. Served on General Zachary Taylor’s staff during the Second Seminole War as a second lieutenant from 1839 to 1840. Deputy U.S. marshal for Ohio from 1842 to 1845. Served in the Ohio militia as lieutenant colonel and brigadier general from 1842 to 1848. Practiced law in Painesville, Ohio, from 1843 to 1848. Practiced law in Monmouth from 1848 to 1861. Attorney in Warren County in 1850. Member of the Illinois legislature from 1852 to 1853. Attorney in Monmouth in 1860. Served in the 9th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment (U.S.A.) as colonel from July 3, 1861, to September 3, 1861. Served as a brigadier general of U.S. Volunteers from September 3, 1861, to April 5, 1865. Commanded the district of Western Kentucky from July 18, 1864, to September 11, 1864. Businessman from 1865.
