Jefferson County, Kentucky, attorney, judge advocate, and soldier. Kentucky native. Son of John W. Hawes and Lydia Hawes. Student in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, in 1850. Attorney in Louisville in 1860. Served in the 7th Independent Battery Indiana Light Artillery (U.S.A.) as a second lieutenant and first lieutenant from January 9, 1862 to December 23, 1862. Resigned December 23, 1862. Served in Battery E 1st Kentucky Light Artillery (U.S.A.) as a second lieutenant, first lieutenant, and captain from June 17, 1863, to January 20, 1865. Served as a judge advocate for military commission at Lexington, Kentucky, from June 20, 1864, to January 20, 1865.
