Boyle County, Kentucky, attorney, soldier, and businessman. Mercer County, Kentucky, native. Son of John Boyle and Elizabeth Tilford Boyle. Married to Elizabeth Owsley Anderson Boyle in Garrard County, Kentucky, on October 18, 1842. Father of William Owsley Boyle, John H. J. Boyle, Clayton J. Boyle, Henry B. Boyle, Amelia Boyle, and J. Tilford Boyle, Jr. Attended Centre College in Danville. Graduated from the College of New Jersey at Princeton, New Jersey. Attended Transylvania School of Law in Lexington, Kentucky. Attorney in Boyle County in 1850. Owned nine enslaved persons in Boyle County in 1850. Attorney in Boyle County in 1860. Owned thirteen enslaved persons in Boyle County in 1860. Served as a brigadier general of U.S. Volunteers from November 1861 to January 1864. President of the Louisville City Railway Company from 1864 to 1866.
