To the Hon — Thomas E Bramlette Governor of the State of Kentucky:

The undersigned Petitioner, John Galvin would respectfully represent and shew to your Excellency that on the 21^st day of August 1863: Two Indictments were returned by the Grand Jury into the city Court of Louisville: The one charging your Petitioner with carrying concealed a deadly weapon: The other with an Assault upon one Charles Harper He states that both the Indictments were tried at the same time, and by the same Jury: ^on the 10^th Septr 1863^ That upon the charge of "carrying concealed a deadly weapon" your Petitioner was acquitted by the Jury, and on the other charge of Assault; He was found guilty and fined the sum of One Hundred dollars & costs &c.

Your Petitioner says that He humbly thinks that great injustice (unintentional) was done him, He says that by Trade ^He is^ a carriage-maker: which he has assiduously pursued, and is now pursuing for the support of himself and family: that Charles Harper also professes to be a Carriage-maker, but that He idles his time away, and from some unaccountable cause, he seemed to take up some dislike to your petitioner, and would taunt him, in an unfriendly manner; when he would be drinking, and finally threatened your petitioner with an attack: and on the Evening of the difficulty Your petitioner believeing he intended to carry out his threat: late in the Evening as your Petitioner was going home. Harper appeared suddenly before your Petitioner, and accosted him, your Petitioner being thus suddenly and roughly accosted by
him, drew his pistol and fired without striking him: under the circumstances ~~Know~~No one but Harper and Your Petitioner could see or Know of the matter: on the trial the law closed the mouth of your Petitioner, and the State used Harper as its witness who stated what He did state, (and He did not state the whole Truth) under feelings of malice and revenge against your Petitioner: Your Petitioner states that He is poor, and has a family to support and that He is unable to pay the fine assessed against him, and He prays your Excellency to interpose your Executive clemeny in his behalf and remit to him the fine so unjustly imposed upon him: and will ever pray &c:

In this case the law has been vindicated. The Petitioner, is a poor man, ~~of fam~~, whose family rely solely upon his labor for a support, I think, that Justice will have been subserved ~~were~~ if fifty dollars of this fine ~~were~~ be remitted
