To his Excellency Thos E Bramlett
Governor of Kentucky

Your Petitioner John T Strode respectfully represents that James W Duckworth was Indicted by the Grand Jury of Clark County Kentucky upon the charge of carrying conceald weapons -- said case as he believes was continued for several terms by the Commonwealth -- ~~and~~ Duckworth as he further believes being ready for trial and very confident of success, upon the ground of being able to show an entire justification for carrying the weapons -- until finaly at the November Term 1863 of said Court -- the said Duckworth was not present, being within the Confederate lines -- the Recognizance bond given by him in the Penalty of $100= in which your Petitioner was surety was declared Forfeited- and at the May Term 1863 of said Court Judgment was rendered thereon in favor of the Commonwealth and against this Petitioner -- The said Duckworth is without Estate -- and your Petitioner limited means are such that he earnestly solicits your Excellency for ~~remit~~ a Remission of said Judgment, Your Petitioner knew that Duckworth was justified in carrying the weapon ^in proper self defence^ & was sure of ^his^ being acquitted on the trial of the case

I cordialy recommend the case of Mr Strode to the favorable consideration of the Governor He is a clever promising young Physician just beginning life & the judgement is oppression on him. He is a very worthy & truthfull young gentleman. Let off this fine &- you will do a righteous deed

I am well acquainted with Doctor Strode have heard the case and say that I believe He ought to be released from the payment of the forfeiture
