I, James C Bryant, State that I am the father of John Bryant Indicted for Larceny at the Last April Term of the Todd Circuit Court — that I went his Security — for his appearance in the same court at its last October Term, in the sum of five hundred dollars That soon after the Term of the court at which the indictment was found, about the first of May, my son John Bryant aforesaid ran off and Sometime in June I received a letter from him in which he stated that he had joined the Federal Army, had enlisted for three years in the 5^th Ky Cavalry, and I heard no more from him untill his name was reported in the Louisville ^Journal^ as having died in Hospital at Nashville Tennessee from wounds received at the battle of chicamauga His name was given as John Bryant of the 5^th Ky Cavalry, and reported as having died Sometime in October last. Since which time I have heard nothing from him Since and am satisfied that he Joined the Federal Army and was wounded at the battle of Chicamauga and died as stated above, about the time or Just before the Last October Term of the Todd Circuit Court at which Term Judgment was rendered against me on forfeited recognizance — I am a poor man and would like to be relieved of the payment of the money except costs & Com^th Attys fee.

James D. Christian and W. P. Prewitt states that they are well acquainted with John Bryan the son of James C. Bryan of this county. S^d John was indited in this county for breaking a Grocery door and taking some whiskey from Jno L Black he shortly afterwards left this county and it was reported that he had joined the Federal Army. We noticed in the Louisville Journal some time in Octr last a notice of the killed and wounded at the fight of Chickamougo and among the names given that had died in Hospital in Nashville Tennessee noticed the name of John Bryan who died of wounds received at said Fight we called the attention of ^s^d^James Bryan to the fact (he belonged to the 5^th Ky Cavalry)
