Your Petitioners would respectfully represent That by a Judgment of the Todd Circuit Court at the Oct. Term 1863, there is in the Penitentiary, a young man by the name of James Shapp, confined on a charge of horse stealing. Sentenced for four years. The facts of his case are about these: In the fall of 1861 he joined a company of Rebel Cavalry Stationed in this county. After the fall of Fort Donnellson his company was ordered farther South in rather a hurry his horse was lame he went to the Stable of F. M. Bristow and took therefrom one of his (Bristow's) horses and left his own in the lot the proof conduced to show these facts- 'twas all circumstantial. he left the Confederate Service returned, was arrested and turned over to the Civil authorities (an indictment in the Mean time having been found against him) was tried and sentenced as above stated. We do think under the circumstances that the punishment already inflicted has been adequate to the offense. Hence we appeal to you for his pardon, and the parties directly in interest Sign this petition. We learn that he is repentant and promises reform. He has a little brother & three sisters without father or mother that need his services. Prior to that time was a poor young man of good reputation.
