To the Hon. Thomas E. Bramlette —
Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky —

Your petitioner, William East respectfully represents to your Excellency that, at the March Term 1864, of the Christian Circuit Court, to wit: on the 22^nd day of March, 1864, two judgments were rendered against him in said Court, both in favor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and each for the sum of Fifty dollars, and that said judgments were rendered against him as the surety on the recognisance of one William T. Bennett, against whom two indictments had been found for offences against the laws of the Commonwealth —. Your petitioner further represents to your Excellency, that, at the time he became the surety of said Bennett as aforesaid, he, the said Bennett, was, has ever since been, and is now a private in Co. E. of the 17^th Regiment Kentucky volunteer Infantry. then and now in the service of the United States, and that he, the said Bennett, could not appear in said Court to answer the charges in said indictments contained, because he was absent with said regiment in the service of his country: — Wherefore your petitioner prays your Excellency to remit so much of each of said judgments, as by the laws in such cases made and provided your Excellency is empowered to remit, and you petitioner will ever pray &c —

The affiant William T. Bennett says that he is the identical person mentioned in the foregoing petition, and that at the time the said W^m East became his surety as stated in said petition, affiant, was, has ever since been and is now, a private in Co. E. 17^th Reg^t Ky. Vol. Inf^ty, then and now in the service of the United states and that he could not appear in court to answer the charges in said indictment contained because he was absent with the said regiment in active service. Affiant further says that on the 20^th day of June 1864, he was disabled by being wounded in the foot by a fragment of a shell, in a skirmish at the base of Kinnesaw Mountain in the state of Georgia and that he is now at his home in said county by reason of said disability.
