I have talked with a good many people from Wayne in regard to the unfortunate affair which resuled in the death of Frielze

All concur in the opinion that Alexander was so completely over come with intoxication, that he was hardly concious of what he was doing. he was wild before, at the time, & afterwards since his recovery, none regret as much as he does the unfortunate affair all more the people say that no good can happen by his trial and conviction, that Alexander has rendered invaluable service for his country that at midnight again & again he crossed the Cumberland from Somerset & traversed the rebel encampment procuring valuable information for Genl Carter, which enabled the Federal army to cross and drive the rebels from that country that in consideration of his great service & perils incurred for the Common Country & for his own county, they Cannot see him suffer for a deed done in a fit of drunken insanity, this is the genl feeling in Wayne — If you conclude to interpose it were well that it were done at once so as to save him the mortification & great inconvence of submitting to arrest & imprisonment.
