Cornelious Gatliff
respectfully represents unto your Excelency, that in the present rebellion he served 3 years in the 7^th Ky Inft U. S. A. in putting down the Rebellion He was born & raised in Whitly County Ky & Joined the Union troops in 1861 at Camp Dick Robison — He was in the Battles with Genl Grant around Vicksburg — Champion Hills, Black River Bridge. Siege of Vicksburg & & others after his term expired he was honorably mustered out of the service, & with his Father moved to Madison Co Ky and commenced business merchandizing

In Feb last 1865 — at a Ball in this County — when unarmed Milton Graves drew a pistol upon him cursed and abused him in the presence of the ladies & company & threatened to shoot him, called him a damned son of a bitch, damned dog & other hard and abusive names. ~~[...]~~

A day or two afterwards Graves overtook him on the Turnpike & talking over how he had been treated at the Ball. They got into personal encounter. both firing about same times — Graves firing 5 times at him
& he fired ^5^ times at Graves, one of his shots inflicting a slight wound on graves finger — He was indicted at the March Term 1865 of the Madison Circuit Court for shooting Graves with intent to kill him was tryed at this September Term 1865 — & the Jury ^reluctantly as they said in open Court^ convicted him ^under instructions of the court^ & sentenced him to Confinement in the State Penitentiary for one year

He lost two of ^his^ fingers off his right hand — long before his difficulty — with Graves — He was not Guilty of Maliciously shooting Graves

He prays your Excelency to Pardon him — he proud a good character & this is the only offence proved against or of which he is Guilty
