To His Excellency Thomas E Bramlette Govenor of Kentucky;

Your petitioner John Banta, states that at the October term 1863 of he Mercer Circuit he was tried on an indictment charging him with keeping a tipling house and was fined $60 and costs — He states the fact to be, and such was the proof, that he had no license to keep a tavern or sell liquor; but he had whiskey at his house which he kept for his own use and a ^~~[...]~~man living in his^ neighborhood ~~his~~ by the name of Charles Catlett having a sick wife came to the house of your petitione as often as twice to purchase a pint of whiskey for the use of his sick wife which your petitioner sold to him, although he had no license to sell, but being poor he could not afford to give his liquor away — This was the whole proof against petitioner and to this extent only he states that he did not comply with the law — He states that he has replevied the fine and will have to pay it soon unless Your Excellency will remit it, which he most respectfully petitions your Excellency to do — He says the foreging statements are true —
