To his Excelency the Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky,

Your Petitioner Ransom Shavers would respectively represent that on the [ ] day of 1859, he was attending the circuit court of Johnson in the town of Paintsville, Some fiew miles from where he resides in the Country, he was informed by a friend that on Isaac Rice Samuel Rice and G. W. Rice was going to his Brother-in laws (where this petitioners wife was remaining during the day) for the purpose of raising a purse with the family, this petitioner feared some abuse to the family, and when the said Rices started this petitioner went on and overtaken them before they arrived at the point designated, the said Rices arrived there and very soon got in Conversation with this petitioners went told her she was a lier & used many other very abusive threats & menances, & told her in a very angry threatening maner that if her husband (refering to this petitioner, who was presant) take it up for her. that he was no better than She & then used harsh & violent language to this petitioner, whereupon this petitioner got hold of a small butther knife & drew it on the party & told them that if they did not dipserse & cease abusing his wife he would cut them, after some time he prevailed on them to leave which they did, & immedially returned to town the Court being in session & went before the grand, Jury & indicted this petitioner for Carying Consealed wepons, at this Term of the said court on the 12^th of Novr, 1860, the case was
Called for trial & this petitioner being unable to account for the Knife Owing to the said Rices being violently opposed & angry with this petitioner he was forced to let Judgement go against this petitioner for the sum of $50.⁰⁰ he says he did not Carry the said knife as a Consealed wepon, never had carried it as any other wepon as such, but only drew the same to protect his family & for no other purpose, he says he is a very poor man & has a family of small children to support, he thinks that that the Cost is as much as he ought to pay, Wherefore he prays your Excelency to remit All his fine Except the Cost, &C,
