His Excellency Beriah Magoffin

Dear Sir at the last June term of the Morgan circuit court, I inflicted a fine of $20. on W, W, Cox sheriff of the county, (Some disorder (having occured in court,) only to make him the more watchful of order & prompt thim to pursue it. he being then a candidate I feared he would be from the circumstance [intimidated] from using that promptness usual with him in Keeping order, I intended at the time to remit the fine at the close of the court, but forgot it & adjourned, hence the fine stands against him, and I have no controll over it, I feel that he ought not to pay it,. and therefore ask your excellency to remit it, if you under the circumstances, feel it would be compatable with your duty,
