Your Petitioner
Thomas Hynes would respectfully state that at July term of the M^cCracken Equity and Criminal Court 1860 he was fined Thirty eight dollars on a charge of trading with a slave That the custom of the place and almost the universal custom in the community of buying and selling to slaves led your petitioner to do the act for which he was fined — which has simply for buying an old coat from the slave — That he keeps a small assortment of notions nearby sufficient to support him that he is poor and that the payment of this fine will be oppresive upon him that in fact he cannot pay the same and has repleivied the debt for the purpose of procurring Executive clemency that a copy of the bond is herewith sent marked (A) Your petitioner is satisfied that he has not intentionaly violated the law. And would without hesitation say that but for ^his^ circumstances pecuniarly and his [...] which is 60 years that he could ~~not~~ most probably pay at some time this money
but as before stated it will take every cent he can make to get along on — In sum of these facts he would respectfully ask your Excelency to remit said fine satisfied that in so doing you will not violate any of the principles of right & Justice
