At the January term of the M^cCracken Equity & Criminal Court One J. H. Powell was tried and convicted for grand larceny and Sentenced to a confinement in the Pententiary for the period of one year. M^r Powell was a total stranger in Paducah, had just come there, with the intention of locating there The proof in the case was sufficient to warrant a convictions. And not withstanding the Jury was compelled to fine the verdict. I understood that on account of M^rs Powell the wife of said Powell, that the Jury was willing to sign a petition to your Excellency for his reprieve, M^rs Powell bears the reputation of an estimable lady, she has a little boy, and no one to look to for support except the labor of her husband who is a mechanic, consequently taking all the circumstances into consideration, I would say that on account of M^rs Powell who will hand you this letter, and her little boy, that you would do right to release M^r Powell
