The Govenor of Kentucky

Your Petitioner W^m Mc Mullen would most respectfully state ^that^ on the 24^th day of August 16861 he was fined the sum of five Dollars & costs for an alleged Breach of the Peace, in the Court of A. D. Haynes Esq^r a Justice of the Peace for the County of Mercer. He admits that he commited a Breach of the Peace but says that it was done under circumstances of extreme provocation, He says that without cause or provocation on his part. he ^was^ accosted insulted groosly on the streets of the Town of Harrodsburg by a man by the name of Bob Gorin, who called Your Petitioner a dam Son of a bitch. dam liar and abused ^him^ so outrageously and so unjustly that he was impeled by a sense of honor to give him a blow, he says that self-respect & the desire of not being regared as a coward required of him to resent the gross insults offered him & he did it without doing Gorin any injury,

Your Petitioner says that in the Police Court of the Town of Harrodsburg on the 4^th day of December 1861
he was fined the sum of five Dollars & costs on a warrant for a Breach of the Peace. Your Petitioner states that the verdict of the Jury in this case was unjust to him as he was assaulted by a certain Michael Outs & that he did no more & attempted no more that to defend himself & keep from being bodily injured. He says that these two fines with costs amount to $25.00. a sum Your Petitioner is wholly unable to pay as he is without means and almost without health. having for some time past been confined to his room & bed & not been scarcely able to maintain himself & is not now recovered. he says that he a mechanic and solely dependant upon his labor for a living. and consequently ~~was~~ he has not been able to settle these judgments even were they Just, besides were he able to work it is very difficult at these times to obtain anything like constant & remunerative employment. He further that these Judgments have been replevied & that a certain John Kane stands as his surety who is also a poor man & now bedfast & not able to satisfy
them without a very great sacrefice. In view therefore of all the Circumstances. Your Petitioner hopes that it will meet the views of Your Excellency of what is Just and right to interpose & afford to the said Kane & your Petitioner all the releif in Your power to grant.
