To Hon^r. B Magoffin Govenor of Kentucky

Your Petitioner John May a citizen of Boyle County Kentucky respectfully represents that he has been unjustly fined upon a trial for a Breach of the Peace in the sum of $20. and costs before Sherod Burton Esqr at Perryville in said County -- that he has been forced to replevy said Judgment and that unless by Executive Interposition upon the facts hereinafter set forth he will be required unjustly to pay the same -- He states the facts of the case to be these that he was in October 1860 attacked on the public highway by a man named Scott Hawkley, who denounced your petitioner, as a liar, and then made an attack on him and struck yr petitioner with a rock, and your petitioner in his necessary self defence & no more, defended himself with only such face as was proper & necessary, but under some sort of prejudice the Jury improperly & unjustly fined your petitioner as afsd. -- He states that he is a lawabiding man that he has had no previously difficulty never had a fight before, and believes most honestly upon his oath that he did only his duty to himself & his family in what he did in his own self defence ~~in the~~ said case -- He states that the most of the Jury, all Except three of them have sent heretofore a petition to your Excellency, but which he learns was mislaid or not recieved

Wherefore he asks that said fine be remitted and that justice be done him,
