My Dear Sir

At the request of M^r Samuel O Berr I write for the purpose of uniting with him in his petition for executive clemency — I regret that I cannot, owing to the time that has elapsed state correctly the facts as detailed in the trial of his case I was his attorney and remember distinctly my sincere coviction that under the law he was entitled to an acquittal, and I attributed the verdict only to the very excited feeling that existed in the public mind at the time against those who were charged with keeping disorderly houses as grocers. I feel assured that a remission of his fine would give satisfaction to those acquainted with the facts — M^r Berry has not been in the business for nearly two years and is regarded I think as an unoffending citizen —
