SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION, May 1, 1861.

In consequence of the unsettled condition of the country, and the present interruption of transit to and from Washington, the Smithsonian Institution undertakes no responsibility as to what may be sent to it for transmission abroad. Whatever reaches Washington by the 25th of May will be forwarded, if possible, at once, provided the way to New York be open for heavy freight.

Whatever cannot be sent so as to arrive before the time specified should be retained until further notice on the part of the Institution.

It is absolutely necessary that each parcel be properly addressed, and endorsed with the name of the sender, and that everything be delivered free of expense to the Institution.

In view of the greatly increased rate of freights from Washington, the Institution may be obliged to call for a reimbursal of the actual cost of sending the packages of its correspondents.
