Dear Friend Jim

I address you a few lines this morning in torder to get your immediate assistance in behalf of a good, honest, hard working but poor citizen of our town, who has been wrongly indited and fined fifty dollars in the circuit court of this county. The case is as follows, This man of whom I speak, William Hanner by name, rented a room in the basement story of his dwelling house to a widow woman who, according to evidence, gave or sold liquor to a slave. He was indited for the offense of this woman because said liquor was dispercd upon his premises, when he himself knew nothing about it, until he was
summoned to appear before the court to answer to the charge. When the case came up for trial it was impossible for him to prove that he had rented the room to this woman, for he had rented it privately to her without any witness whatever, and she herself was absent upon the day of trial. He was in this way very wrongly & unjustly fined fifty dollars, as you see from the copy of the judgment which I enclose Now, knowing that the Govener is very much engaged with public affairs, so much so at least as not to notice particularly such a small matter as this, I write to~~you~~ to get you to go to him immediately with this copy of the Judgment and get him to remit the fine, Dont let him grant a respite only, for the
case is so plain and the whole thing so unjust, that it ought to be remitted instantly. Please attend to this right away as the fine will be due tomorrow, I will get the Sheriff to wait on Hanson a few days until you send the remittal. Hanner is a true Southern Rights man, poor in purse, with a large family to support; and a dime to him is ~~[...]~~ of great use and importance in buying the loaf to feed his offspring. The health of Paris is good, The only pestilence now raging amongst us is abolitionism, enacted and driven in by Garrett Davis and his Lincon musketts.
