To His Excellency the Govenor of Ky

Your Petitioner James A Tomlinson states that on Saturday 3^d of Aug 1861 having been during the day at a [...] in the Country he returned to Harrodsburg and on reaching town he saw two men in a fight one of whom was a man by the name of Cook. Petitioner dismounted from his horse to seperate them and was Knocked down with a rock in his Effort to make peace [...]. He inquired who struck him and he was referred by several persons present that it was Cook whom he was trying to get out of the fight. he thereupon struck Cook several times under great passion and provocation and as he concurs in the necessary defence of his own personal rights as a peace maker. Petitioner being Young and inexperienced was persuaded under the circumstances to Confess judgment before C Chinn Judge of Mercer County Court for $30 --
which sum on reflection and the advice of friends he thinks he should not be made to pay wherefore he asks that in justice to him that a fine may be remitted-
