We the undersigned respectfully ask your to remit the fine imposed on L B Whitaker on the 11^th day of Sept 1861 in the case of Commonwealth vs L B Whitaker W E Whitaker & C D Cooper The facts are as follows W E Whitaker alleged that Cooper said he was in favor of expelling all the Southern Rights men from the county Cooper went to the Blacksmith shop of the Messrs Whitaker and a fight ensued both parties being damaged slightly- No one was present at the commencement no one saw who committed the assault on being arraigned L B Whitaker was fined $27 and costs. Mr whitaker is a peaceable mane and his character ~~[...]~~ he prays a remittance of the fine imposed upon him

To his Excellency Beriah M^cGoffin

I do certify that I have been acquainted with Mr L. B. Whittaker for some Eight Years and know him to be a peacible citizen a poor man with a large family, and believe that the fine should be remitted. I am also well acquainted with all the Jurors in said action and know them to be Violently opposed to Whitaker and could not do him Justice. in fact the whole court constable & all this 16^th day of September 1861
