To his Excellency the Governor of Ky

Your petitioner Samuel B Hughs will State his case as followeth, that he is Indicted in the Union circuit Court for Stabbing.... Coffee with the intent to kill — : this Indictment was made about five years ago next spring. that he has urged a trial ever since and the case is yet Continued, and your petitioner has urged a trial, under the provision of the Federal Constitution which declares that "the accused Shall have a fare & speedy trial &c — he is bound by recognizance for his appearance from court to court, and he wishes to be freed from his bonds- he will State that at the time the supposed offence was committed, he was attending an ~~[...]~~ Exposition on a show boat on the Ohio river and in walking down the steps of the boat in company with his friend Coffee, he made some remark to him, & intended to Strike him on the shoulder to elicit his attention, he had an open Knife in his hand, and owing to the fact that he had drank to much liquor, he accidently inflicted a Small would in Coffee^s Shoulder — that he had no grudge or malice against Coffee at the time and has had none since- that Coffee & your petitioner, were friends before and ever after the accident, he wishes to Changehislocation
under existingCircumstances and as he can not leave Union County in consequence of his recognizance & surities untill april next, and from present appearances, he has no hope then of a trial under these Extraordinary circumstances, he prays for the interposition of Executive Clemency and prays for the issue of a pardon for said supposed offence and as in duty bound he will ever pray
