To the Honorable Beriah Magoffin
Governor of the State of Kentucky

The undersigned citizens of Henderson County/in behalf of Mrs Hannah E. Grant beg leave to petition your Excellency to extend your executive clemency in remitting a fine imposed upon her at the December term of the Henderson Circuit Court, on an indictment for keeping a Tipling house, in Henderson County, for the sum of Sixty Dollars.

Your petitioners beg leave to represent to your Excellency that Mrs Grant is a widow without any means of support or income save a small gocery through which she has honestly endeavored to maintain herself and children. That it was entirely through ignorance that she became guilty of this misdemeanor, she says the persons who purchased liquor of her insisted on her selling them the liquor "by the drink" and told her that it was no violation of the law. if she would give them a drink of whiskey they would by a cigar at a price sufficient to indemnify her for the liquor. She being a woman and trusting and relying on the statements of these persons gave them a drink of liquor and sold them a cigar and for this the judgment was rendered
against her.

A copy of the judgment is sent herewith.
