To the govenor of the commonwealth of Kentucky,

Your Petitioner Wm A Clark was tried and fined two hundred dollars at the April term of the pendleton circuit court 1862 for keeping a tipling house for three months now your Petitioner states that he was an old man ^79 years old^ and a stranger to the laws of this state and was building and did let some of his Neighbors have whiskey several times but did not no it was in violation of law your Petitioner states that he is a poor man and very feeble in body and wholey unable to pay said fine and dose think that in your clemency you would interpose in his behalf and save his gray hairs from the Jail house of the county. he dose not denie having sold some whisky but having been in the state but a short time he did not no that it was so grave a violation of the laws of the state. Wherefore he prays your Execellency to remit said fine for the reasons above stated

I defended Clark & I am satisfied that he was prosecuted on account of his politicks & had he been a union man he would not have been fined agreable to the proof & what out side information I could git he did not sell as much as $5 worth in all & so soon as he got his House completed he took out tavern licens I think the fine shuld be Remited with Respet and Remaine
