To his Excellency Beriah Magoffin
Governor of Kentucky --

The undersigned petitioners represent That Martin Skaine was tried in the Lexington City Court for an assault upon Matthew McNamara -- and was fined $20. besides costs amounting to $17 -- There was no battery proved in the case -- McNamara had just before the said assault was committed, beat and shot a friend of the Defendant Skaine -- and it was this circumstance that led him to commit the assault -- He is a peaceable man and in very moderate circumstances -- and the costs amount to a sufficient punishment
