My dear friend

At the instance of a Constituent of yours, Mr W^m Hehl, who lives in the first Ward, I take the liberty to trouble you with a small matter. but to this poor-fellow, a thing of great importance; some time ago he had a little grocery up on Green street I believe in the outskirts of the City and some negroes & white men came into his place and played cards some person had the poor fellow indicted for it: It was not tried, and his lawyer. and the City Att^o and the marshall got him to confess a Judgment and pay the Costs; and that they would join him in a petition to the Gov to get him to forgive him which he did.

They came to me, together with his wife and without fee
or reward I prepared his petition for him, and knowing the Governor personally since they being very ignorant. I called upon the Governor for him and delivered to him their humble petition to which the Gov has never made no reply: I can only say this that this poor fellow has nothing but a wife and seven children and he supports them by hard work daily, and unless something can be done for him they will take him, to the work house on monday to pay it; He is a poor ignorant creature and they deceived him with the confession of Judgments by making him believe they could get the Governor to remit it: The petition was before the Governor when He was in Louisville. If you can do any good for him, you will aid a worthy man

I heartily join with M^r Speed in requesting you to remit the fine of $200 — imposed on M^r Hehl, in the City Court of Louisville

I believe from all the information in my possession that M^r Hehl is a worthy man but poor and ignorant
