W^m J Hales, formerly of Rockfort, Ind^a, a respectable and worthy young man, married in Union Co Ky — There, in a difficulty with a man much larger than himself he was compelled to use a pen knife to defend himself —

The Examing Court held him over for trial, and his young wife mortgaged ~~two~~ a slave to her husbands surety, a M^r Jones, to indemnify him — Young Hales has no estate of his own, and his wife depends on the hire of her two slaves for a livelihood.

Since the difficulty young Hales is in the Union Army, and his adversary it is
believed, is with the enemy —

The bail was forfeited for non appearance and Execution is out against the surety for the money — which will of Course ultimately come out of M^rs Hales limited means —

The bond was for two hundred dollars, and I respectfully petition that the interest of the Commonwealth in the Judgment may be remitted —

The young man was in the service under the lamented Col Netters when the latter fell near this place in ~~October~~September last.

I vy much hope you will consider it a case for Executive clemency —
