To His Excellency the Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky

Your Petitioner J. G. Hoffaker would respectfully represent that at the March term 1863 of the Carroll Circuit Court he was fined sixty dollars and Costs for keeping a tippling house — of which amount he has paid $43 — and a capias pro fine is now in the Sheriffs hands for the residue and he will be arrested and imprisoned therefor unless he can obtain a respite — He states that he is a cripple having entirely lost the use of one leg and can only hobble about upon crutches — He is also very poor — having very little property or means of making a livelihood for his family — and is now regularly licensed as a coffee house keeper — He cannot now raise the money to pay the residue of the fine without serious detriment to his business, and therefore prays that the collection thereof may be respited for some reasonable time until he can raise the money with less sacrifice and as in duty &^cMay 30. 1863.
