At the June Term 1863 of the Caldwell Circuit Court Thomas W. Pickering was fined the sum of $500.⁰⁰ for usurpation of office of sheriff of Caldwell County. (appointed by the Provisional Government of Ky.) But notwithstanding said Pickering on the trial of said charge was clearly proven to be guilty of the offence, Yet in view of the fact that said Pickering is largely involved in debt as surety and otherwise and his having a large family to support and being a man with a large family, We Would respectfully ask Executive clemency in his behalf and request that Said fine be remitted or such portion of the same as may seem to your Excellency Just and right, M^r Pickering said he discharged the duties of the office of sheriff under the Provisional Government of Kentucky had been confined as a prisoner at "Johnsons Iseland for political offences, and as We understand has taken the oath of allegiance & conducted himself as a loyal citizen since his return home
