GOVERNOR OF SAID COMMONWEALTH.
To all whom these Presents shall come, Greeting:

Know Ye, That J. W. Lewis having been duly elected JUSTICE OF THE PEACE for Simpson County, in District No. 5, I hereby invest him with full power and authority to execute and discharge the duties of said office according to law: And to have and to hold the same, with all the rights and emoluments therunto legally appertaining, for and during the term prescribed by law.

In Testimony Whereof, I have caused these letters to be made patent, and the Seal of the Commonwealth to be hereunto affixed. Done at Frankfort, the 14 day of May, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and 63 and in the 71^st year of the Commonwealth.

I do solemnly swear, (or affirm, as the case may be,) that I will support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of this State, and be faithful and true to the Commonwealth of Kentucky, so long as I continue a citizen thereof, and that I will faithfully execute, to the best of my abilities, the office of Justice of the Peace for [ ] County, in District No. [ ], according to law; and I do further solemnly swear, (or affirm,) that since the adoption of the present Constitution, I being a citizen of this State, have not fought a duel, with deadly weapons within the State nor out of it, with a citizen of this State; nor have I sent or accepted a challenge to fight a duel with deadly weapons, with a citizen of this State; nor have I acted as second in carrying a challenge, or aided or assisted any person thus offending — so help me God.

I as presiding Judge of said county court state that the within named J W Lewis refuses to qualify as a Justice of the peace for said county

And I now respectfully recommend Elijah Williams a citizen of said District as a suitable person to fill said office who has signified his willingness to accept ~~said office~~.
