With this I have notified Adjt. Gen. Boyle. of the non acceptance of Commission ats 1^st Lieut & Adjt. of the 49th Ky. Inf. which you so kindly assisted me to procure, and deeming it but just, to give you my reasons for so doing is my excuse for now addressing you.

No Commissioned officer being with the Co. but myself. The dissatisfaction that it would create, if I should leave them at this time, and at the solicitation of the Field Officers of the Reg't. I have concluded to stay with the 4^th Ky. & while I think it will be for the good of the service to remain here, I would earnestly reccomend Thos P. Young Co "A." 4^th Ky, for the promotion, (with whom you are personally acquainted.) He is a young man of good character, and fine capacity for the duties of an Adjt. and I understand our Col. would readily consent to his "Muster out", if he could procure the Commission.
