I have the honor to request that you have copied for this Dep^t the original muster in roll of Maj Barnes battalion 16^th Ky Cav^l. They were mustered in by Lt M^cIver at Paducah Ky without the consent of the Governor, as they were intended to fill the depleted ranks of the 12^th Ky Cav^l[...] were without proper authority mustered as the 10^th. The War Dep^t. as soon as notified of the facts revoked the muster and ordered their consolidation with the 12^th. But in the mean time one battalion had been engaged in several engagements and lost a number of their men. And in consideration of this fact the Governor requested that Lt M^cIver^s muster be accepted, changing it however from the 16^th to the 12^th,

which was acceded to, as per letter of Maj Vincent to Maj Sidell dated July 1^s 1864. These men are now with the 12^th Cav^l and known as companies "I" "K" "L" & "M".

I deem the above explanation necessary to enable you to get the proper rolls.

In addition to the rolls you have already furnished, I desire that you furnish the following copies. viz
