Vanderburgh County, Indiana, sheriff and soldier. Son of John Gavitt and Alice Smith. Father of John Smith Gavitt, William Gavitt, and Joseph Gavitt. Sheriff of Vanderburgh County from 1853 to 1857 and 1859 to 1861. Major in 1st Indiana Volunteer Cavalry Regiment from August 1861 to October 1861. Lieutenant Colonel in 1st Indiana Volunteer Cavalry Regiment on October 1861. Killed in battle at Fredericktown, Missouri, on October 21, 1861.
