Member of the United States Senate from 1817 to 1819, 1835 to 1848, and 1855 to 1861. United States district attorney from 1827 to 1829. Attorney general of the United States from March to September 1841 and from 1850 to 1853. Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky from 1848 to 1850. Employed Thomas Lee as a laborer in Franklin County in 1850. Owned forty-two enslaved persons in Franklin County in 1850. Owned nine enslaved persons in Franklin County in 1860. Unionist member of the United States House of Representative from the Eighth Congressional District of Kentucky from 1861 to 1863. Died in Frankfort, Kentucky on July 26, 1863.
