Kentucky soldier, attorney, and politician. Fleming County, Kentucky, native. Married to Keturah Moss Tibbatts Hodge. Father of S. Catherine Taylor Hodge, Anna Taylor Hodge, Jane “Nan” Hodge, Mary Hodge, William Baird Hodge, Georgena Baird Hodge, and John T. Hodge. Attended the Maysville Seminary, Mason County, Kentucky. Graduated from the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, in 1845. Served in the U.S Navy as a midshipman during U.S.-Mexican War. Resigned from the U.S. Navy in 1850. Attorney in Mason County, Kentucky in 1850. Member of the Whig Party and Southern Democratic Party. Ran unsuccessfully for the United States House of Representatives as a member of the Whig Party in 1852. Elected to the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Kentucky in 1859. Elector for John C. Breckinridge in 1860. Attorney in Campbell County in 1860. Member of the Council of Ten in the Provisional Government of Kentucky. Served in the Confederate States Army as a private, captain, major, colonel, and brigadier general. Served as an assistant adjutant general to John C. Breckinridge. Member of the Provisional Congress of the Confederate States from 1861 to 1862. Member of House of Representatives for the First and Second Confederate Congress from 1862 to 1864.
