Educated at Centre College. Graduated from the Transylvania University Medical Department in 1827. Practiced medicine in Greensburg, Kentucky, from 1827 to 1839. Member of the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Kentucky from 1847 to 1859. Speaker of the house in the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Kentucky from 1857 to 1859. Farmer in Christian County from 1853 to 1861. Owned twelve enslaved persons in Greensburg 1860. Delegate for Stephen A. Douglas in the 1860 Democratic National Convention in Baltimore, Maryland. Canvassed and served as an elector-at-large for Stephen A. Douglas in the 1860 Presidential election. Following the election of Abraham Lincoln, he moved enslaved persons to Yell County, Arkansas. Member of the Provisional Congress of the Confederate States from 1861 to 1862 for six weeks. Served as a volunteer surgeon for Confederate soldiers in the field from 1862 to 1865. Relocated to Louisville, Kentucky, in the tobacco warehousing business.
