Paducah, Kentucky, civil engineer and soldier. Maryland native. Son of James Tilghman and Anne Caroline Shoemaker Tilghman. Married to Augusta Murray Boyd Tilghman on May 26, 1843. Father of Lloyd Tilghman, Fred Tilghman, Slidell Tilghman, and Horatia Tilghman. Graduated from the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, in 1836. Served in the First U.S. Dragoons in 1836. Resigned from the U.S. Army. Civil engineer in Panama and throughout many southern states, building railroads and canals, from 1836 to 1861. Veteran of the Mexican-American War. Relocated to Paducah, Kentucky, in 1852. Owned two enslaved persons in Paducah in 1860. Colonel in the 3rd Kentucky Volunteer Infantry Regiment (C.S.A.) from July 1861 to October 1861. Promoted to brigadier general in October 1861. Commanded troops at Fort Donelson and Fort Henry in Tennessee. Prisoner of war following the surrender of Fort Donelson and transferred to Fort Warren in Massachusetts from February 1862 to July 1862. Ordered to Mississippi in August 1862. Reassigned in October 1862 to command a division of General Mansfield Lovell in Mississippi.
