Ohio soldier. Ohio native. Graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1852. Served in the 3rd Infantry in 1852. Instructor of tactics at West Point in the late 1850s. Colonel of the 1st Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment (U.S.A.) from April 1861 to September 1861. Promoted to brigadier general of volunteers on September 3, 1861. Promoted to major general of volunteers in July 1862. Command taken away after Battle of Chickamauga in 1863 and not reassigned to command troops until November 1864.
